Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity helps students practice subtracting multiples of 10 when the subtraction requires converting 1 hundred into 10 tens (regrouping across the hundreds place). Use Diwali-themed counters (paper diyas or small objects) to make tens and hundreds concrete. For partner work, have simple materials: 20 small counters per pair, paper, pencil, and a camera or tablet for recording. High-quality open-ended responses will show place-value thinking (e.g., “I changed 1 hundred into 10 tens, then took away 30”), include an accurate numerical strategy, and may show a drawing or blocks representing hundreds and tens. Teachers can mark open responses correct if the reasoning and result match and incorrect if the solution is numerically wrong or reasoning is missing/inaccurate.
