Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity guides students through a simple design-and-explain project. Students plan, sketch, explain purpose, photograph a finished model (real or drawn), and work with a partner to refine ideas. Prepare paper, pencils, colored markers, and optional craft scraps (cardboard, foam, fabric). For the partner page, provide a device or camera for taking a photo or short video. High-quality open responses show a clear purpose tied to design choices (materials, shape, parts). For the screen-record tasks, look for students who explain steps, use drawings or labels, and give reasons for choices. For paragraph answers, expect 3–6 sentences that name the shoe’s user, what it does, and one reason their design meets the need. Teachers may grade open responses as correct/incorrect based on whether the student meets the brief (explains purpose and supports it with at least one design choice).
