Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity helps first graders hear the /ɔɪ/ sound and learn two common spellings: oi and oy. Use the matching and sorting pages to teach rules (oi inside words, oy at the end) with examples. For small groups, model sounding out words slowly and stretching the vowel sound. For assessment, use the drag-and-drop question to check individual understanding. Prep: Print or display word lists. For the partner activity, students need paper and pencil or crayons and a device for photo/video if available. High-quality student responses will show correct sorting of words, a clear explanation or recording naming words with oi/oy, and a neat drawing or clear photo/video that demonstrates the partner task result. Teachers can mark open responses as correct if the student correctly identifies and shows oi/oy words or explains the rule simply.
