Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity focuses on reading fluency and comprehension for second graders using a short, simple narrative. Page 1 asks students to read the passage aloud so teachers can check fluency: accuracy, expression, and pacing. Pages 2–4 include auto-graded questions (multiple choice, drag-and-drop, short answer) to check literal comprehension and sequence. Pages 5–6 are open-ended for students to explain and create: Page 5 asks for a written paragraph and Page 6 invites a multimedia response. Prepare recording tools (microphone or device camera) and optionally bring a small backpack or snack props for the multimedia task. For the paragraph question, a high-quality answer should: mention both friends (Chan and Eve), explain a feeling or idea about the hike (e.g., it was long but fun), and use 2–3 complete sentences with correct details from the passage. For the multimedia activity, a strong response will clearly show or explain the view from the hill (drawing, photo, or video) and mention one or two details from the story (lake, dock, five miles). Teachers can mark open responses as correct when they include accurate story details and show clear thinking or effort.
